Roma's Story

I’m talking about that kapi story. We were there at the store buying food and water and then four women went out. Then we came back and picked Tjawina up. Then there were me, Jennifer, Ivy and Mrs Woods. Then we went to Piplaytjarra, went through the turn off. We went for punu to cut some punu, but we ran out of diesel. Then we was sitting down wating dinner, the sun was going down and we was singing songs, gospels and praying. It was really nice. Then we got up in the morning. Then we went for punu. It was really hot, all the grasses were dry. There was no green. There was no water. We only had one bott;e of water. We finished that bottle in the afternoon. Then we was thinking how we going to go. We got no food, no water, no diesel, that radiators not working, the batteries not working. How we got to go? But we was happy. We had one really big goanna. We was under the big shade sitting down. Our feet was burning from the heat. We staying under that shade till afternoon. We had cut some punu before but now we were resting in that shade. We came back to the camp. We put the punu in the camp. Two womans went for walk. There was three womans waiting in that shade. Me, Tjawina and Mrs Woods. Jennifer and Ivy went, “Let’s go look for punu. Must be down that way along the creek. The they see this little bird. We call Ngingi. They were sitting around in that spot. Those Ngingi was talking. We was thinking, there must be water here somewhere. We was looking around and we saw this little hole. It was wet. We was digging with a stick. Ivy and Jennifer was talking. We should get a crowbar., shovel and wira and come back. They came with two big goanna. We was asleep and we woke up. Then we saw those two big goannas. I was the cook, cooking those two big goannas. We was waiting for that feed. Then we were looking at those goannas and thinking, we can’t have these goannas without water. We might choke! We never ate those goanna, We saved them for water. It was afternoon, the sun was going down. Then we got a lot of empty bottle, crowbar, shovel, wira. The three of us Ivy, Jennifer, me. We was walking and walking up to the water. Then we dig that water. The ground was soft and I was telling them to dig it this way. The sun was going down and we was still digging, digging. We made little fires around so we could still keep digging. We were taking it in turns to and then it was me digging. We was digging, digging and it was my turn. I pushed the crowbar straight down into the ground. One and two and then the water came out. We was very happy to the water coming out. It was lovely and cold. I told them to let the water fill up to the top. The water filled up and then we filled our bottles. I had three cool drink bottles. Jennifer had four bottles Ivy had four plastic bottles. Then they drink the water. It was lovely and cold. Then they make a fire. Then we was sitting around the fire with all the dogs. Then we was giving those dogs a drink too. Then we filled the water again and we was going back to the camp where Tjawina and old Mrs Woods was waiting. As we got closer we was calling out, “Tjawina, we got water”! She saw that big bottle of water and she got really happy. Then we made a cup of tea because when we had no water we was just eating sugar and our mouths were really dry. We had been cutting the branches and drinking the dew in the morning. The water was soothing our throats. They were so dry. Then we was all happy about that water. We was singing songs at night. Then we made a cup of tea and went to sleep. When we got up in the morning we ate those two big goannas for breakfast. We was saying, lets put all the extra blankets in the car and just keep one each. Then we went and we see another goanna for our lunch. Later we were still sitting next to the rockhole and we heard a car noise coming up. It was Damien and Belle coming. Jennifer was shinning a mirror so they could find us. “They at the creek there”. They was coming from Karratha Creek. They could see us now and they were coming towards us. We was filling our bottles up and the kids on the Toyota jumped down to see that water too. They were saying in the Toyota. “That is amazing that God gave you that water.” Then Damien went to the camp to fix the Toyata, He filled the diesel up, charger the battery up, water in the radiator. Then he bought the Toyota around to us. We had our lunch and cup of tea and then we went home. Then some people was still looking around for us, but we told where we were cutting punu. Early days times they used to tell stories. The old people said if there was no water in the rockhole you have to look around for tjunu (holy water). Its says, when we can’t see water in the rockholes. We walk around and we heard birds talking. It means they are sitting on top of the water. This is the holy water. It’s an early days story we hear, we hear it from our grandmothers and grandfathers. When the birds are sitting there, they are sitting on holy water. God gave us that water. Palya.
